Nickleback don't really set themselves up to be liked. They openly admit that they like being popular and signed to a mainstream label instead of playing to the myth that musicians hate money, a myth which ironically major labels encourage and 'rebels' buy into. They're heavy enough to draw the attention of metal fans but aren't actually a heavy metal band and there's nothing a metalhead hates more than someone who isn't trying to be metal. They don't pretend to be punk but are commonly associated with grunge which brings them under the punk radar even though many so called grunge bands were not as influenced by punk as people like to think. They're attacked for being unoriginal by critics and they don't experiment much with their sound (of course Iggy Pop doesn't either but he's infallible). Nickleback don't go to great lengths to show off their musicianship with long solos and audio effects and focus more on entertaining a crowd. In fact they are praised mostly for their live shows where unlike 'real bands' they actually can play their songs to perfection. Nickleback are also the target of a music industry conspiracy to wipe out post-grunge and Nu metal much like they tried to get ride of glam metal in the 90's through MTV. Their decline was exaggerated since Bon Jovi, Guns n Roses and Van Halen were still popular despite MTV's propaganda. Nickleback have however been selling more records than most 'real bands' over the last decade but critics like to camouflage their corruption by claim the the majority people "aren't refined enough to appreciate the brilliance of [list of pretentious recently signed indie bands] over this garbage".
